
Montcalm Tops Ferris State in Close Match
The clay target team had another successful week with Trap and Skeet. On Tuesday, September 25, the team traveled to Mecosta Rod and Gun Club to compete in trap against Ferris State University. The athletes faced challenging weather conditions, including intermittent heavy rain throughout the evening. Nevertheless, the team excelled during their practice round, missing only four targets.
In the first round following practice, Jack McBride and Chase Merritt led the team, each scoring 24, and both achieved a perfect score of 25 in the second round. Evan Plonka contributed with a score of 22 in the first round and a perfect 25 in the second round. Drake Syrjala recorded 24 in the first round and 22 in the second. Azariah Trumble finished with 17 points in the first round and improved to 23 in the second round. The team's overall score set a new record with 231 out of 250 targets, surpassing Ferris State, which finished with a score of 223 out of 250 targets.
The skeet team also delivered an impressive performance this week, achieving a total of 206 targets out of 250, which marks a new program record. Sophomore Drake Syrjala led the team with 49 targets, marking his personal best in college. He scored 24 in the first round and achieved a perfect 25 in the second round, a first for the season. Evan Plonka finished with 43 targets, followed by Chase Merritt with 39, Jack McBride with 38, and Azariah Trumble with 37.
The Centurions aim to enhance their scores this week in both Trap and Skeet as they return to Flat River Conservation Club.
